Throwback Thursday: My Nurse Practitioner Program in Photo

Last night I had the privilage of working with one of my very favorite new grad nurse practitioners in the emergency department. Watching her navigate her new position made me remember how utterly terrible, horrible, awful it was to show up at work in my early nurse practitioner days. So many questions, so few people willing to help. If that's where you find yourself today, don't worry, you'll make it. Hang in there.

As I reminisced about my experiences along my nurse practitioner journey, there have been plenty of ups and downs. I recall watching back to back episodes of Lost (now there's a throwback) as I slogged through drafting care plans. I have fond memories of bunco night with my NP program classmates and hitting Nashville's honkey tonks late night. Then, there's the awkward feeling that comes with shadowing a clinical preceptor all day followed by utter exhaustion and anguish upon arriving home to realize there's a theory paper due the following day. Ahhh the memories!

While there are plenty of challenges that come along with life as a nurse practitioner student, cherish your time in school. Make close friends. Ask as many questions as possible. Sacrifice the 'A' every once in a while to spend time with family. Life as a student is exciting. With the unknown that is your future career comes a sense of adventure and anticipation. There's hope in the hurdles you encounter

Last night was one of those times when I realize just how far I've come in my nurse practitioner career. So, this morning I went through some old files to get a visual of my progress. Now, these are a blast from the past!

My first set of scrubs. Taken in my single-girl condo where I lived with two NP program classmates in the first year of our accelerated program.

Just another day with friends in the sim-man lab.

Graduation day! Lifetime friendships made? Check. Degree obtained? Check. Totally clueless as to my next steps? Check.

Present day-covering the Ebola outbreak. Who would have thought?!

If you're a nurse practitioner student or recent graduate, stick with it. You have plenty of challenges to overcome but your efforts won't go unrewarded. You never know where your career will take you!
