Spring CME Conferences for Nurse Practitioners

Can you believe it's already time to start thinking about spring schedules? I've been asked to submit my April time off requests to my employer next week, but April seems like an eternity away. I guess it's time to start planning my spring calendar. I need to get serious when it comes to thinking about where I'm going to fit in my continuing medical education hours this year.

I try to round out my educational experiences by choosing a CME conference held in an interesting, or at least relaxing, location. This way my conference experience takes on a good balance of personal and professional time. Here are a few conference offerings that fit the bill this spring.

Primary Care in Paradise- Maui, Hawaii

Featuring a convenient half-day schedule that leaves plenty of time for sunbathing, this conference covers everything from valvular heart disease to personality disorders. Speakers will discuss a wide range of topics relevant to nurse practitioners practicing in the primary care setting. In the afternoons, conference goers can enjoy Maui's pristine beaches- the perfect balance of education and vacation.

Clinical Pearls in Medicine: Cardiology and Dermatology- Venice, Italy

What better way to explore Italy than with a costal cruise? Departing from Venice, attendees of this conference will visit ports on the Adriatic Sea from Croatia and Slovenia to Montenegro and Italy all while getting a medical refresher. Courses range from cardiology topics such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure to dermatology discussions on psoriasis and pigmentation disorders. The range of topics is an excellent fit for primary care nurse practitioners with an international travel bent.

AANP National Conference- New Orleans, Louisiana

With more than 40 skills workshops and 260 sessions, the national AANP conference is back in 2015. Nurse practitioners can earn over 37 CME hours by attending not to mention enjoy the sights and activities New Orleans has to offer. From browsing (or boozing?) on Bourbon Street to enjoying fresh beignets in the French Quarter, there's something for every NP's interest, both personal and professional, at this robust conference.

Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine for Primary Care- Savannah, Georgia

There's nothing more romantic and relaxing than a springtime trip to the Old South. Enjoy the charm of Savannah while brushing up your pediatric know how with this conference April 10-12. Courses cover topics such as chronic abdominal pain in children and the complexities of teen and adolescent ADHD. Like my prior conference picks, courses at this meeting adjourn in the early afternoon allowing for plenty of time to sightsee.

Wilderness Medicine and Whitewater Rafting- Mt. Shasta, California

Calling all adventure enthusiasts! This is the conference for you. I've been dying to go on a wilderness CME trip and this one sounds right up my alley. Attendees paddle remote areas of Northern California passing through exhilarating rapids and unmatched scenery. During breaks in the rafting adventure, NPs discuss topics such as high altitude illness and evaluation and management of trauma in the wilderness setting. An optional ascent of Mt. Shasta completes the conference.

Geriatrics and Pain Management for Primary Care- Santa Fe, New Mexico

Pain is often difficult to treat and the experts speaking at this conference can help. Courses from "Rational Polypharmacy for Chronic Pain Management" to "Overview of Opioid Pharmacology" will clear up the confusion for NPs managing pain. After a morning of learning conference goers can enjoy Santa Fe's finer offerings from art galleries to a luxurious spa.
