PA vs. MD Salaries: State-by-State Comparison

It's well known that physicians earn significantly more than physician assistants. But, how much more? Several factors come into play in comparing salaries of healthcare providers. Location and specialty are primary influencers. Comparing PA and MD salaries on a state-by-state basis gives a more in-depth picture of differences in compensation between the two professions. Remember, physician assistant scope of practice regulations also affect PA salaries and may account for variations across state lines.

Overall, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, family and general practice physicians earn a mean annual wage of $186,320. Physician assistants earn, on average, $97,280. So, primary care physicians earn about $89,040 more annually than PAs. Physician salaries listed below are broken down by state and reflect data for family and general practice physicians.

Comments

I personally work over 55 hours per week without overtime pay. This is not uncommon with fellow PAs or NPs in my facility. There are a few that work part-time and spend extra hours with phone calls and paperwork.

Stephen

These data are deceptive and incomplete. Your hourly wage calculation assumes physicians and PAs work the same number of hours, which is incorrect. Studies vary on hours worked by physicians and physician assistant, but all studies agree that physicians work more hours.

Most midlevel providers work only 40 hours per week (often with overtime pay for additional hours worked). Primary care physicians work about 55 hours per week.

Let's now use your assumption of a 52 weeks of work in a year (which is unrealistic but I will keep because it is consistent across the two groups), a 40 hour work week for mid-level providers, and a 55 hour work week for primary care physicians. Looking at California, the hourly physician wage falls from your calculation of $95.27 to $69.29 using a more accurate physician work week.

Please be more rigorous and thoughtful when making calculations in the future.
