Why Employers Should Think Differently about Hiring New Grad APPs

There's significant resistance among healthcare employers when it comes to hiring new graduate nurse practitioners and physician assistants. And, it's understandable. Advanced practice providers (APPs) have significantly less formal education than physicians but in the clinical setting may see the same or very similar patients. Navigating this "skills gap" proves challenging. Helping bridge this gap requires the time, effort and willingness of more experienced providers reducing their time available for revenue-generating activities. Though the downsides of employing less experienced NPs and PAs are apparent, there is some silver lining to this approach.

For Employers: The Nurse Practitioner Onboarding Checklist

If you're an employer who hires advanced practice providers, you're well aware of the challenges associated with onboarding a new nurse practitioner or physician assistant. The NP or PA many times must complete their own certification and licensure process. Then, credentialing resumes. Not only must the proper paperwork be submitted to state boards of medicine and nursing, as well as payers, the provider also needs an introduction to your practice. Without systems in place for the advanced practice provider onboarding process, something is bound to fall through the cracks.

Job Search: Breaking Through at a Large Hospital System

Tips for Nurse Practitioners

I recently spoke with a friend who is a highly specialized nurse practitioner (electrophysiology). She has about ten years of experience and would be a great catch for any cardiology group. When she moved to a new city this past year, however, she encountered significant hurdles landing a job. The city where she lives is dominated by large hospitals and even though she applied for job postings online, she seemed to get nowhere in the bureaucratic hiring processes of these institutions.

How Likely are You to Pass the Emergency NP Certification Exam?

If you haven't heard, there's a (relatively) new specialty certification out there for nurse practitioners. Starting in 2017, the AANPCB began to offer a certification exam for emergency nurse practitioners. This exam is available to NPs who have either completed an emergency NP program at their university, or FNPs who have experience working in the emergency department.

Which States Have the Fewest Nurse Practitioners?

Last week we talked states with the highest concentration of nurse practitioners. This week, let's look at states with the lowest concentration of NPs. While the concentration of nurse practitioners in a given area may not be the most important metric to follow, it can be a sign of certain trends like the job market. States where NPs are fewer may have a grater need for individuals working in the profession and therefore more job opportunities and higher wages to name one significance.
